Shop owner’s real problem in Sivewright

The problem is not the foreign nationals, it is the police and stakeholders not doing what they promise.

The drug lords and prostitutes are not the biggest worry for an owner of a shop in Sivewright Street who is pleading with police and local government to do their jobs.

Owner of the Hollandia supermarket, Nearchos Hadjizacharia, invited the News to his shop to see the filth in the streets and to ask the stakeholders to stop taking bribes.

He said he has contacted the police and even went to the police station to complain about the foreigners who sell illicit cigarettes. However, nothing has been done about it since his complaint has been lodged.

A complaint about so-called ‘muti’ containing alcohol being sold in Sivewright Street also has gone unnoticed. In fact, the shop owner claimed he has seen police drinking the ‘muti’.

According to the shop owner the Department of Health also is not taking responsibility. He allegedly contacted them regarding food being prepared and sold on street corners and unregistered restaurants running from residential garages.

Food, illicit cigarettes and 'muti' containing alcohol are being sold on the pavements of Sivewright Street.

Another problem is shebeens selling liquor illegally.

He said he even has invited the police to come see how liquor is being used on the street to which he received the response, “There is nothing I can do, I am not from the liquor department.”

The shop owner claimed he still is waiting for dustbins in Sivewright Street to take care of the problem as promised in 2003 by the former Chief of the Department of Environmental Affairs called Snowy.

“Mogale owes me 10 years’ wages for the workers I had to pay to pick up the litter on the pavements where food and alcohol are being sold illegally. I don’t want the dustbins for myself, I want it for the people. I like to live in a clean environment.”
