Happy Birthday to a wonderful person

I was invited to attend a very special person’s birthday sermon this past Sunday.

This person has a rich history with the News and it was an absolute pleasure to be part of his milestone birthday celebration.

Pastor Gerrit Mes from the AFM Church in Noordheuwel will be celebrating his 60th birthday this Friday, 31 July.

During the service it was quite clear that Pastor Mes is a pillar of not just his congregation, but this community as well.

Two people who know him very well delivered a testament of their friend and pastor. It brought me to tears.

But it wasn’t until Pastor Mes started thanking the News for the past 32 years of partnership.

The way he talked about how us, the News, and how we helped him become a household name in Krugersdorp, made me ball my eyes out.

Luckily I was wearing waterproof mascara because Pastor Mes invited me on stage to receive a bouquet of flowers.

I was floored.

It was not even my birthday yet I was thanked for being someone special in his life.

Thank you Pastor Mes!

There comes a time in every newspaper editor’s life where the person feels as if though they cannot do anything right.

Pastor Mes just made me realise that I am, through the newspaper, making a difference in this community.
