[SOUND] ATM scamsters strike again

A woman's card disappears within seconds as the scamsters strike again.

Another woman fell prey to the ATM scamsters who are making the rounds in the Krugersdorp area.

Jessica de Klerk went to the Absa ATM outside the Krugersdorp West Spar in Rustenburg Road, when she was robbed of all her money by an unknown man possibly linked to previous incidents.

De Klerk said she simply stopped at the ATM to withdraw money on her pensioner mother’s behalf when the person in front of her turned out to be one of the scamsters who have been operating in the area the past month.

“The ATM’s screen looked different than usual, which made me hesitant to proceed with the transaction,” De Klerk explained.

She claimed the screen displayed two options, ‘Cash Sent Withdrawal’ and ‘Back’.

When it was her turn to use the ATM she asked if the machine was in order on which the scamster replied, “Yes it is working”.

Initially De Klerk did not want to withdraw money when the scamster suddenly came from her right-hand side, quickly grabbed the bank card out of her hand and inserted it into the machine.

“He instantly disappeared and so did my card,” De Klerk said.

He quickly got into a sliver Audi where his accomplices waited for him and drove off.

She assumed the card was in the ATM. She tried to get the machine to return her card, but without success.

In a telephonic interview with the News, De Klerk explained in detail how quickly the incident happened.

Within minutes the De Klerk’s mother’s pension of R800 was withdrawn at a nearby ATM.

“At first I didn’t think anything suspicious of the man. He was so neatly dressed. I definitely would be able to identify him if I saw him on the street again.”
