Krugersdorp’s brave fire workers

A group of brave young men and women train daily to fight fires and help save lives.

Every morning bright and early a brave team come together to train hard because later they might need to help save some lives in Krugersdorp.

The team is better known as the Working on Fire crew, which is part of a government-funded programme of job creation focusing on integrated fire management in South Africa. These brave firefighters are recruited from local communities and trained in firefighting skills and extreme fitness.

In the Working on Fire programme, the young fighters learn about fire awareness, fire education and prevention and fire suppression skills, which form the basis of a firefighter’s job.

These young men and women form part of the wildfire fighting ground crews and have been stationed at the Krugersdorp and Magaliesburg Fire Stations since 2011.

The West Rand District Municipality is utilising the Working with Fire team to help stop the scourge of wildfires, which costs the South African economy billions of rand every year.

They also assist in making fire breaks within the WRDM area and are deployed as an assistant crew for major incidents in the area.

In addition, these teams assist the Fire Protection Association (FPA) structure interms of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act of 1998.

These firefighters are ready for any fire, big or small.
