ATM bombing suspects still at large

Six armed suspects ordered employees of a fruit and vegetable shop and its customers to lie down before blowing up an ATM inside the shop.

Police is searching for six armed men who blew up a Standard Bank ATM on Friday just after noon. The ATM is inside a fruit and vegetable shop at the corner of Grey Street and Albertina Sisulu Road in Lewisham.

According to police the men entered the Costa’s Fresh Produce shop and pointed a firearm at the shop owner while ordering customers and other employees to lie down on the floor.

Thsepiso Mashale, Krugersdorp Police spokesperson says the suspects went to the back of the shop where they used explosives to blow up the ATM.

“After blowing up the machine they fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.”

It is alleged that the suspects fired shots outside the shop before taking off in a white Corsa bakkie with registration number SKV 893 GP.

She says no one was injured during the incident.

Police detectives are investigating the case and no arrests have been made yet.

Leon Ehrke, chairperson of the newly launched Sector 9 Community Policing Forum (CPF) for the Mindalore and Lewisham areas says he is aware of the incident and that it is an indication that the community of the area should get involved with their local CPF.

“I have handed out pamphlets in these areas telling residents that we are ready to tackle crime, but just like any other organisation we need members to be successful. We need everyone – businesses and residents – to get on board to support us.”
