Mayor’s hands dirty for worthy cause

After the formalities, the participants rolled up their sleeves and dirtied their hands by cleaning, painting, tiling and building new toilets.

Guided by the theme government has adopted for its current term – Together We Move South Africa Forward – Executive Mayor Councillor Koketso Calvin Seerane, councillors and municipal officials took part in a variety of activities to create a cleaner Mogale City.

Councillor Seerane went to Munsieville where he cleaned and plastered the Mother Charlotte Home Base Care and Ithemba Labantwana Centre. He was joined by representatives of the SA Local Government Association (Salga), Matcom Printers and the National Development Agency. Professor Charles Nwaila, Traditional Affairs Director General within the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) also attended.

Seerane said the community of Mogale City and beyond should uphold the legacy of the late former President Nelson Mandela by engaging in positive community building activities.

“This is important for us as South Africans to celebrate this day (Nelson Mandela International Day), which is celebrated world-wide. We are here to play our part in changing the lives of our people for the better and make a difference in our communities,” he said.

After the formalities, the participants rolled up their sleeves and dirtied their hands by cleaning, painting, tiling and building new toilets. The highlight of the event was the handing over of the goodies, toys and a brand-new washing machine to the centres.

The goodies were donated by Salga, the National Development Agency and Matcom Printers while Woolworths retail store donated food parcels.

Representatives of the sponsors also added their voices and encouraged community members to make every day a Mandela day and support the centres’ keepers.

Seerane went on to join the Community Works Programme volunteers in rebuilding a nearby badly burnt-down house.
