WRDM putting smiles on children’s faces

One of the activities on their schedule this International Mandela Day was handing out goods to the children at the Ikusasa Community Development Centre.

The West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) has taken some time off their busy schedule to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged people on International Mandela Day.

In response to the call by President Jacob Zuma to clean up South Africa on 18 July employees of the WRDM, led by the Executive Mayor Mpho Nawa, visited various homes and disadvantaged families to do cleaning, painting and maintain vegetable gardens.

The children from the Ikusasa Development Community Centre were happy that they were not forgotten on International Mandela Day. In the back from the left are Mothusi Mothibi, Abram Olyn and Mandla Dlangalela. In the front is Mbekezeli Ncube.

One of the activities on their schedule was handing over toiletries, soccer balls, food and a packet filled with sweets to the children at the Ikusasa Community Development Centre in Von Brandis Street.

Donald Nyirenda, the project manager at Ikusasa says they are grateful to the WRDM for spending time with them and giving them goods for the betterment of the children at the centre.

“Everybody is celebrating Mandela Day and it is good to see that people are focusing the late president’s passion – children.”

He says the centre is catering for about 39 children between the ages of seven to 18 years.

“We work closely with the Department of Social Development. We are not just a shelter where children sleep. We have various programmes to help the children with development and education.”

Nyirenda says although they are funded by the government they still are in need of many things such as clothing, sports equipment, soccer kits, shoes, tracksuits and bags.

“The children especially loves to play soccer, so anything to help them with staying active will be appreciated.”

Nyirenda says anyone who wishes to assist them in any way can contact him on 011 660 5746 or on 072 205 5856.
