Children demand protection and respect

About sixty children took to the streets with placards, chanting that they need to be protected.

About 60 children from three nursery schools joined the fight against child abuse as part of this year’s Child Protection Week.

The children, together with their teachers and with the assistance of Mogale City Traffic Department took to the streets on 5 June with placards showing pleas for protection and respect.

The march started at the Light Centre for Children with Disabilities in Mathew Street. Then they walked along Edwards Steet, turned into Victor Street and walked down Albertina Sisulu Road in the direction of Krugersdorp before making their way back to their starting point.

People came out of their homes and shops to see why the children were chanting.

Glenny Marubini, founder of Light Centre says the children enjoyed every moment of reminding people about their rights.

She says for the second time two other nursery schools, Home Sweet Home and Monica’s Little Angels have joined their march.

“I invited them and they were more than happy to be part of it again this year.”

Marubini says her centre is trying its utmost best to give disabled children a better life but still needs the help from the community to make it more comfortable for them.

“We still need beds, matresses, carpets, food or anything the community can assist us with.”
