New school for Ga-Mogale

The R58 million state-of-the-art school has 30 classrooms, two science laboratories, a multi-purpose computer centre and a sporting facility.

In order to provide pupils quality education, Mogale City Municipality and the Gauteng Provincial Government opened a new school in Magaliesburg.

The provincial government led by Premier Nomvula Mokonyane together with Mogale City Executive Mayor Koketso Calvin Seerane officially opened the school for the residents of Ga-Mogale.

Mokonyane said the construction of the school came about after she realised that most of the pupils around Magaliesburg were travelling long distance to school, and during winter season the majority were skipping class due to the cold weather.

She, together with the MEC for Education Barbara Creecy, saw the need for a closer school after witnessing pupils travelling so far, some even barefoot.

“As a government we saw the need to build this school. We are doing this because our government is caring and have the interest of our pupils at heart,” Mokonyane said.

The construction for the Magaliesburg Secondary School, which is a no fee school, started last year in November and according to Mokonyane, the school was completed in record time. Currently the school has 149 Grade 8 and 9 pupils.

The R58 million state-of-the-art school has 30 classrooms, two science laboratories, a multi-purpose computer centre and a sporting facility. The project created more than 200 jobs for local people through the expanded public works programme.

“The opening of the school is also part of the poverty alleviating programme, because we understand that by creating jobs for our people they will earn money from the construction of the school. This is done to fight poverty, joblessness and inequality,” Mokonyane said. She added that the local people should look after the facility.

“Most importantly, we want to indicate that this school belongs to the community, and we hope that you will look after the school and make sure that the school is not vandalised.”

Creecy encouraged parents to use the open window period to register their children for the 2015 academic year and avoid late registration.

Seerane who welcomed the residents and the audience said the opening of the school is another feather in the municipality’s cap.

“It is with great pride that we welcome our premier in our area, though she happens to be the daughter of this municipality. The opening of this school is indicative of the fact that our government is doing a lot to address the plight of our people,” Seerane said.

“We are also pleased that the construction of this school has dispelled the myth that black companies are incompetent when it comes to construction work. This school was built by an accredited black company that was done in record time and without any hindrance.”

After the formalities were done, the Premier together with the Mokonyane, Seerane and Creecy planted the trees around the school and later went on a tour of the school.

  1. All good and well – typical pre-election window dressing. Let’s see if they get their handbooks in time, let us see if teachers are going to BE at school;if there will be proper discipline; what the pass rate will be ESPECIALLY in math and science. It’s like giving someone with no arms or legs a thoroughbred race horse and expecting them now to go win the July Handicap or something!
