Municipality pleads with residents to minimise power usage after load-shedding

The municipality has received many complaints for the last two weeks from residents that there is an extended period of power outages after load-shedding that last 30 to 45 minutes.

Load-shedding has been extended to Stage 6 nationwide and the electricity demand will be much higher as winter is rapidly approaching.

Meanwhile, the Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) has been receiving many complaints from residents around Munsieville, Noordheuwel, Kenmare, and Kagiso about the prolonged periods of power outages after load-shedding.

MCLM has therefore explained the issue and how they can assist them in solving it.

”Load-shedding prevents residents to do activities that require the use of electricity so when the power comes back on there is usually a high surge of residents turning on their power which puts serve pressure on the grid, which then causes glitches in the flow of electricity because too many people turn the power on simultaneously,” said Adrien Maytom, a member of the Municipal Watchdog Committee.

According to the municipality, appliances such as your geyser usually play a big role in the glitches, so it is important to turn off your geyser during load-shedding to prevent those prolonged periods of no electricity when it is supposed to come back. The municipality also encourages residents to turn off appliances at peak times (07:00 to 10:00) and 16:00 to 20:00.
