Two stores in Key West targeted simultaneously

Two stores in Key West Shopping Centre were targeted at the same time on Monday, April 3 at about noon. While a clothing store was targeted, a watch store was also being robbed.

The Krugersdorp Police and West Rand Trio Task Team are investigating two cases of business robbery after two stores in Key West Shopping Centre were targeted at noon on Monday, April 3.

Krugersdorp Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane explained that in the first incident, an employee told police she was working when an unknown man entered the shop.

He then ordered her and one of her colleagues to open the office. A second man then entered with a firearm and ordered the staff to lie on the floor. One of the victims was told to open the safe and the armed robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this instance.

Captain Sebonyane said in the second incident, the victim was on duty at the main door to the office.

“He was approached by an unknown man wearing blue jeans and a navy blue top and he told the victim that it is a robbery.”

The robber then ordered him to open the cellphone display and took the cellphones while the other staff members were locked in the office.

The suspect then ordered the victim to open the safe and he made off with an unknown amount of cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash.

“Then the suspects also took an undisclosed amount of cash from the tills, locked everyone in the office, and left.”

Captain Sebonyane added there were about four male suspects involved in the second robbery and fortunately no injuries were reported.

Key West’s Marketing Executive Birdy Matshidiso Modise confirmed the two robberies in a statement and said that one happened at Time Zone and the other at Ackermans.

“The matter was handed over to the police for further investigation. One shot was fired but fortunately, no injuries were reported. The safety of all patrons and shoppers is, and always remains, the center’s top priority and we will continue to remain alert,” she added.

Captain Sebonyane said in both instances cases of armed robbery have been opened and the investigation continues. He appealed to the public to help with any information that can help apprehend these perpetrators. He added that the public should not confront them.

“The suspects are deemed to be armed and dangerous.”
