Mayor to Kagiso residents’ rescue

After listening to the Kagiso community, Mayor Tyrone Gray assured them that change will be on the way and all their issues would be resolved.

Resentful and frustrated residents of Kagiso took to the streets recently and barricaded roads, demanding that the municipality attends to them and their issues.

They were so vocal that the Mogale City Executive Mayor Tyrone Gray had to come to their aid. On Friday, March 3, they finally had someone to listen to the issues affecting them as the mayor took time out of the office to address the residents of Lanwen and Boiketlo hostels in Ward 14.

The complaints from the residents would range from a lack of job opportunities to a lack of growth in their ward. The mayor did not hesitate to listen to the residents as they expressed their frustrations.

One of the residents, Rebecca Montshwe, is believed to be a sub-contractor. She claimed that the main contractors working in the ward were lacking transparency.

“I have been appointed at the dumping site for yellow machinery, but they gave us 2015 rates which are unfair to us,” said Montshwe.

She added by saying, “When contractors come to the area, we must be uplifted and get work experience but none of these things are happening. How are we going to employ our residents as sub-contractors if things continue like this?”

Despite all the anger of the residents, they were happy to see their mayor attentively listening to them. One of the residential committee members in the ward, Rose Mokaleng said they were happy to rub shoulders with the mayor. She praised the mayor by saying ever since he took office she has had more reasons to be optimistic as he takes his time to serve his community.

Another resident, Peter Mrafe echoed the sentiment by saying that the mayor is the first to come and the last official to come and witness how people are living in these hostels. He would then conclude, “We are happy for your work, and thank you once more for coming to see us. Please tell us when are you sending the inspectors to come and inspect what the contractors have done here.”

After listening to the community express their grievances, he assured them that change will be on the way and all their issues would be resolved.
