Sustainable safe water for Muldersdrift community

A community in Muldersdrift has received four new solar-driven boreholes to provide them with safe drinking water.

It is a basic human right to have access to clean, safe, and drinkable water. Something that the community from Rhenospruit Plot 7 in Muldersdrift can now also enjoy after the municipality unveiled four new boreholes on February 23.

The Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) said in a statement they are driven by the commitment to provide access to quality water. This forms part of their service delivery goals.

This community does not have access to municipal bulk infrastructure namely water and electricity at the moment meaning no access to clean and safe water. It was however also not cost-effective to continue providing water tankers to the community as a long-term solution and many sustainable options were considered. In the end, they decided on solar-powered boreholes.

A small water treatment plant had been assembled at each of the boreholes, where the borehole water has undergone various treatment procedures from filtration to disinfection via chlorine and UV-light processes.”

The four boreholes now supply water to 45 JoJo tanks which have been placed throughout the community. These have also undergone required testing and the municipality said they can confirm that these comply with drinking water standards. MCLM has also installed fire hydrants across the community to ensure safety in case of fire.

β€œIn wrapping a day jam-packed with hard work and excitement, designate MMC for Infrastructure Development Services (including Water and Sanitation) Councillor Kagiso Lekagane concluded that his department will continue to look at alternative, cost-effective and sustainable solutions to service communities in fulfilling its water services authority mandate as a municipality.”
