Rangeview man sentenced in attempted murder case involving security guard

Phillip Vermeulen received six years imprisonment wholly suspended for 5 years and fined R5 000 or nine months imprisonment wholly suspended for 5 years after being found guilty of attempted murder and defeating the administration of justice.

A 53-year-old man, Phillip Vermeulen from Rangeview, has been convicted and sentenced in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court after being found guilty of attempted murder and defeating the administration of justice.

Krugersdorp Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane explained the incident occurred along Simon Bekker Drive in Rangeview on November 22, 2021.

“A 32-year-old security guard was patrolling in the Rangeview area at about 02:45 when he spotted a man armed with a firearm. The man then started shooting at the security guard who was still in his vehicle. The security guard then reversed trying to get away from the shooter. The security vehicle’s windscreen was damaged on the windscreen as well as the right front tyre.

“The security guard then called for backup before police were contacted. A case was then opened and the suspect was later arrested by Constable Modiri Nonyane and Sergeant Samuel Morena. He was then detained in Krugersdorp police’s custody,” Sebonyane said.

Sebonyane added the case was investigated by Detective Sergeant Trevor Nhlapo who made sure that the state got a successful conviction.

Vermeulen was sentenced as follows:

• On count 1: Attempted murder – six years imprisonment wholly suspended for 5 years on condition that the accused is not convicted of the same crime of attempted murder during the period of suspension.

• On count 2: Defeating the administration of justice – fined R5 000 or nine months imprisonment wholly suspended for 5 years on condition that the accused is not convicted of the same crime of defeating the administration of justice. The court also determined Vermeulen is unfit to possess a firearm.

Krugersdorp Police Station Commander Brigadier Xaba applauded the members for a job well done following the sentencing.
