Police join stakeholders in school safety indaba after hostage situation

Police have taken charge of educating stakeholders and role-players on the importance of safety in the schools in the community.

Kagiso Police has taken a proactive approach in addressing learners at numerous schools in the area on bullying, gangsterism and drugs.
Major role-players like the Mogale City Local Municipality Mayor and stakeholders consisting of various governmental departments and religious leaders joined the police in their quest.

Numerous stakeholders, role-players, and community safety groups were invited to a School Safety Forum meeting at Krugersdorp Police Station.

Initially, the police and the stakeholders visited two schools; Kagiso and Madiba Secondary Schools. The visits followed a shooting incident that occurred at Kagiso Secondary School on Friday morning, February 3, where a teacher shot and killed a knife-wielding man who allegedly held staff hostage at the school.

The visits were a joint venture where learners were addressed regarding the shooting incident.

On February 8, a School Safety Forum meeting was held at the Krugersdorp police station where stakeholders, role-players, and community safety groups were invited to attend.

Scholar public transport, incidents at schools like assaults, theft, sexual harassment, etc, health and safety at school buildings and tuck shops, events on school premises, safety at sports and recreational events, school holiday programmes, security and safeguarding at the schools after hours and school holidays were addressed.

The stakeholders were encouraged to report any criminal activities at the schools immediately to the police by contacting Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or information may be communicated via the MySAPS App or SMS number 32211 and remain anonymous.

Krugersdorp Station Commander Brigadier Happy Xaba thanked the team for the effort they took to attend the meeting for the sake of children’s safety at the schools in the community.
