LETTER: ‘God, you show me the chicken and I will catch it’

‘When you pray, don’t become passive. Ask God what you can do. There is a warning’ – local pastor.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

All of us have been told to pray, it is a discipline, it is a religious duty. Most, if not all religions, teach their followers to pray.

But what should we pray? Most of us pray, God fix things, change things or get us around things.

Over the years I have learnt that this type of prayer leads to frustration and disappointment. God does not always fix things or change things. It is as if my prayer, “Please get rid of Goliath in my life,” is just not going to happen. All these prayers are passive prayers. Maybe it is time to pray action prayers, action on your side. For example, if you need a chicken, don’t pray, “God give me a chicken”, pray, “God, you show me the chicken and I will catch it.”

I learnt this lesson from a wise, African man. He needed a chicken. He knew it was not going to fall out of the sky. He knew he had to be ready to do something.

When you pray, don’t become passive. Ask God what you can do. There is a warning. Also pray and ask God to show you when you should not do anything. To leave it to his timing.
Passive prayers do not bring results.

“God, show me the chicken and I will catch it.”

Think about it.
