Sharp rise in kidnappings on West Rand

According to the police, young women are kidnapped with the intention to be raped, murdered or held for ransom.

Police warned residents across the West Rand District of an increase in the number of kidnappings and human trafficking incidents.

According to West Rand District Police spokesperson Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere, young women are kidnapped with the intention to be raped, murdered or held for ransom.

These incidents occur during the night when people are requesting e-hailing transport services or are hitchhiking.

The perpetrators of crime stop at the hiking spot where they give the unsuspecting victims a ride, but later they rob them of their belongings and rape them. We also find that in other incidents, the victims are kidnapped and a ransom of cash is required from the family of the victim whilst being threatened,” said Mogwere.

Targeted victims are largely young women travelling from taverns at night, and stranded adults who are travelling from work late at night.

Residents are urged to be alert at all times and adhere to the following safety tips:

1. Inform the family members when you leave home, where you are going and with whom.

2. If you have requested an e-hailing transport service, make a note of the registration number, make and the colour of the vehicle.

3. Be able to recognise the driver of the vehicle.

4. Send the family members the details of the vehicle that is transporting you.

5. Minimise hitchhiking and travelling with strangers at night.

6. Refrain from walking in isolated areas at night.

7. If you are ever in immediate danger call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or SMS number 32211; alternatively use the My SAPS app which can be downloaded from any smartphone.

8. If you are unsure of your current location, try to find any landmark nearby.

In some cases, attempting to leave a trafficking situation may increase the risk of violence. It is important to trust your judgement when taking steps to ensure your safety.

• If it is safe to go outside, look for the address on the building.

• If there are people nearby and it is safe to speak with them, ask them about your current location.

• Plan an escape route or exit.

• Contact trusted friends or family members to notify them and ask for assistance.

Adherence to the above-mentioned tips can help the family members recognise when you are in danger and alert the police. It can also help the police with an investigations,” concluded Mogwere.
