LETTER: ‘Live for others and your life will have meaning’ – pastor

A woman with a very sad story changed a passionate pastor's life.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

Many years ago, a lady was referred to me for help. I was a very young but passionate pastor. She told me her very sad story. She had been to a dozen or more people and her problems only got bigger. You can imagine her reaction when I said I could solve her problems.

My solution was not more advice but an activity. I took her to West Rand Cripple Care. A job, by God’s grace, opened that same day. There were people who had no arms but painted, using their feet. They needed someone to open the paint, set out the brushes and canvases.

This lady was perfect for the job. A few weeks later I popped past there only to find a woman whose life was completely turned around. Her focus was not on her little world anymore.

She now had a new appreciation for her many blessings. In short, she had a purpose to wake up to and live for now.

She changed my life. I learned then that advice must be a last resort and only given if requested. If you want a new life, step out of your own little world and see what is going on around you. Live for others and your life will have meaning.

This is a principle deeply embedded in the life and message of Jesus.
