School girl raises R6 000 for the war against rhino poaching

'It is through heartfelt initiatives like Abby’s that we’re able to bring special stories of support to the rhino rangers we work with' – StopRhinoPoaching.com founding director.

Abby Joubert, 11, a Grade 6 learner from Monument Primary School managed to raise R6 000 at her cake sale fundraiser at Valley View Shopping Centre on Saturday, August 27. Her purpose is to support StopRhinoPoaching.com.

By selling delicious baked goods ranging from brownies, cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies and milk tarts to lemon meringues, Abby made a difference.

“The cake sale was successful because we sold everything! I enjoyed the morning because I met lots of people and made money to help save the rhinos,” said a very satisfied Abby.

Elise Serfontein, founding director of StopRhinoPoaching.com at Abby’s fundraiser in Noordheuwel.

Mom Mandy Joubert explained that Abby’s Personal and Social Well-being (PSW) project in the subject Life Skills for the term was animal cruelty.

“Abby chose to focus on rhino poaching and while doing her research she came across information about children overseas doing fundraisers for rhinos here in SA. Abby thought this was a great idea to make a difference and to show other children they can make a difference too.”

I chose rhinos because I love seeing them on our family trips to the Kruger National Park. I just can’t imagine not seeing them anymore.”

Clearly an avid animal lover Abby enjoys being in the wild and has been visiting the Kruger National Park since she was six weeks old. She is also extremely fond of watching wildlife documentaries and wants to be a wildlife vet when she is older.

The community opened their hearts and wallets to Abby’s cause for rhinos. Pictured with Abby Joubert are Brad and Shelley Emmett.

Elise Serfontein, founding director of StopRhinoPoaching.com explained that they are committed to helping protect and conserve rhinos in South Africa. Launched in July 2010 they are an independent web-based platform dedicated to raising awareness and support for the war against rhino poaching.

We welcome her initiative and are proud to be the recipients of her efforts. It is through heartfelt initiatives like Abby’s that we’re able to bring special stories of support to the rhino rangers we work with. Thank you to all involved in Abby’s project.”
