Local writer’s book now in school libraries

A local writer has published her first book in which she encourages others not to let their circumstances hold them back in life.

Fikile Oyekanmi believes nothing should hold you back in life, especially not background or circumstances.

She has shared this message in her book Girl, you are all that which speaks about her own experiences and aims to encourage readers and assure them that your circumstances, experiences and background do not define you.

We don’t choose where we start our lives and how others treat us, but we can choose the direction we want our lives to take,” she said.

The 40-year-old said her passion for writing and encouraging others led her to write the book. Her original plan was to write a book on another topic, but once she started writing she realised that this message laid on her heart the strongest.

The words just flowed and after one year of writing, and with the help of her publishing team, Girl, you are all that was published.

She said she was proud of her book.

It confirmed that our dreams are valid. Seeing a product of my conception coming to life was just amazing.”

She not only wrote and published her first book, she successfully submitted it to the Gauteng Department of Education. It will be placed in school libraries all over Gauteng.

She is now working on a second book and also keeps herself busy with ‘Dance with Father’. This is an annual event which Fikile founded and organises every year for fathers and their daughters. The dance is held to encourage fathers to build closer bonds with their daughters.

Fikile has a powerful message for her readers and her community. “Whatever others say about you is not as important as what you say to yourself. The most fierce fight you will ever fight is the one within you. If we all look closely to our inner beings, we will realise that we all are masterpieces, irrespective of others’ opinions and our circumstances.”
