In a statement from Gauteng Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili, she said the Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has welcomed the arrests.

The murders took place in Tshepisong in Kagiso on October 23, during the arrest police also seized one firearm and a vehicle.

Muridili explained that a lone gunmen entered a house that day, and shot and killed the owner, his girlfriend and a neighbour.

More gunmen joined him in shooting randomly on a busy street. There was a wedding celebration in the street as well that day. Two more people were certified dead on scene while another two died in hospital.

Five victims were also treated for gunshot wounds.

On Wednesday, November 10 a team consisting of Crime Intelligence, the Provincial Investigative Unit, local detectives, Highway Patrol, the Flying Squad and the Police K9 unit followed up on information received.

The five men were apprehended in Rietvallei Extension 2 and 3 in Kagiso.

The suspects have already been linked to more cases of murder and attempted murder, as well as illegal mining.

Muridili said the commissioner commended the team for the fact that the arrests were made without any injuries, taking into account that the men were regarded as armed and dangerous.

The hard work of the investigating team is highly commendable. Now, I have instructed them to ensure that they send a water-tight case to court so that the arrested suspects do not get to walk the streets of Gauteng again,” said Mawela.

“This particular incident was disheartening as innocent people who were enjoying themselves at the nearby wedding had to be caught up in the random shooting. The killing of any person is not acceptable, let alone seven. I am happy that those suspected to be responsible have been arrested. They will face the full might of the law.”
