MMA fighter PJ almost where he wants to be in his career

Local fighter PJ Brits is carrying on that ageless tradition of fighting by stepping into the ring and taking home the gold during MMA tournaments.

The art of fighting has been around for centuries and every great nation has its own tales of great men in the ring.

Competitive combat has taken on various forms – from the Ancient Greek and Roman form of Pankration in the 600s BC to the modern forms of televised boxing, kickboxing and other forms of mixed martial arts.

Local fighter PJ Brits is carrying on that ageless tradition by practising the various forms of professional kickboxing on a daily basis.

Having started kickboxing back in February 2020 as a way for him and his little girl to keep fit, the 29-year-old PJ participated in competitions soon after starting, and has climbed the ranks to currently being a green belt fighter.

In March 2020, PJ took on the Greater North 2 competition where he won a gold on the first day and a silver on the second. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, most tournaments were cancelled or postponed throughout 2021.

On September 25 though, PJ entered the ring once more during the Grass Roots MMA tournament where he won with a submission move only one minute and 39 seconds into the fight.

I want to win the light heavyweight belt at EFC some day. I like to keep pushing myself to greatness and I do a lot of fitness, combos and groundwork for MMA with Sensei Fred Lourens at the Team Rage 2 club. Every morning I start off with a gym session to keep my body in a good condition,” PJ said.
