Rhythmic gymnasts make their club proud

After rhythmic gymnastics were introduced to the Summit Gymnastics club, a few young gymnasts picked up multiple medals at a recent district competition.

There are many gymnastic disciplines, each impressive in their own right. Many gymnasts try their hand at the different disciplines when they’re young and might decide to focus on one in particular as they grow older.

About a year ago Summit Gymnastics Club introduced rhythmic gymnastics to their repertoire before being kicked to the curbside by lockdown regulations. This year they are going at it full steam as there is a lot of interest in the discipline among their younger members.

Whereas other disciplines are mostly practiced on beams and bars, rhythmic is done on the floor, on mats, and with various apparatus such as hoops, ropes and ribbons, and combines dancing with gymnastic principles.

A short few months after starting training, the Summit gymnasts participated in the Central Gauteng Novice Rhythmic Competition on 7 and 8 May in Randburg.

Among the little ones (aged 7 to 11) who competed, Caitlyn Knighton, Charlotte Hide and Lily-Paige Perry placed first in their divisions. Shaylee Swart finished in second place. Annabella Henry and Abigail Wisse came in fourth, with Gabriella Roets finishing in fifth place.

After competing in the Gauteng District competition, all seven received their Gauteng half colours.
