Hoërskool Bekker hosts Spur Schools MTB League

Young bikers rode their hearts out at the Spur Schools MTB League last weekend.

The Spur Schools Mountain Bike (MTB) League season resulted in a nail-biting final at Bekker School in Magaliesburg last weekend.

More than 10 500 pupils competed across South Africa, with 438 mountain-bikers representing 84 schools that all wanted points and the title of Spur Schools MTB League Champion. Hoërskool Menlopark, which is the reigning league champion in Gauteng, walked away with both the boys’ and the mixed team’s trophies, and the title of National Spur Schools MTB League Champion.

The girls’ team from Potchefstroom Gimnasium walked off as the national girls’ champions with 72 points. Hoërskool Menlopark’s girls’ team took second place with 66 points, and Midstream College girls’ team came third with 59 points.

The Paul Roos Gimnasium’s boys’ team came in third with 99 points while Grey College beat them by one point to come in second.

Parel Vallei High School’s mixed team came in second with 100 points while Transvalia High School took the third place with 94 points.

The sub-junior boys category was won by WG van der Walt from Montana High School, who set the pace for a high-speed racing day by breaking away from the pack early in the race, in 00:45:53. Travis Stedman of Thomas More College came in second, and Marnus Prinsloo from Grey College came in third.

Fifteen-year-old Jamie Penfold took the lead from the start, and won the youth boys’ category in a time of 00:44:56, while Stehan Wolmarans from Hartebeespoort came in second and Adriaan Duminy from Wesvalia took third place.

Gauteng dominated the a very competitive three lap youth boys 16 years’ race. The eventual winner was Chris du Plessis, from Hoërskool Menlopark, with JP Lloyd of Zwartkop second, and Brendan van Eeden of Potchefstroom Gimnasium third.

In the junior men’s race the top three positions were taken by Wessel Botha of Hoërskool Menloparkwho overtook on a single track section on the final lap to take the lead and win in a time of 00:58:46, with Pieter du Toit of Volkskool Potchefstroom and Henry Liebenberg took second and third place respectively.

Front runners in the girls’ races were Beani Thies of Wartburg Kirchdorf School who won the sub-juniors in a time of 00:35:09, Kaylin Gombos of Transvalia who came second in a time of 00:35:59 and Jone van Eeden of Potchefstroom Gimnasium third in a time of 00:37:21.

Spur Steak Ranches donated R10 000 to school teams that won their age categories at the National Inter-schools Finals. “Spending the weekend at the Finals here at Bekker, with so many talented riders and seeing the ever-growing support, reinforces the League as something very close to our hearts. By offering this prize money we hope to encourage the sport within the schools and assist them in further developing their teams,” said Clare Rainey, Spur’s Brand Development Manager.
