Truck loses glass cargo on R28 hill

Road closed after a truck carrying thousands of glass bottles posed a treat to the traffic.

The traffic in Pinehaven came to a virtual standstill when a truck carrying thousands of empty bottles broke down yesterday afternoon.

The truck, carrying 90 000 empty green bottles, got stuck on the steep uphill in Pinehaven on its way to Krugersdorp on 11 August at about 1pm.

Besides the truck, the thousands of bottles posed as threat as the risk of them falling onto vehicles in the oncoming traffic became evident.

“We had no choice but to close the road,” Mogale City Traffic Department spokesperson, Papi Motaung explained.

At about 9.30pm, a total of approximately 30 000 bottles were dumped off the truck. They came down at high speed and with a loud noise, shattering as they hit the tarred road.

With the help of Motaung, two assistant superintendents, a superintendent, six traffic officers and a chief superintendent rushed to the scene, where they assisted the road cleaners in cleaning up the mess.

Fortunately no-one was injured during the incident and the roads were re-opened later that night.
