Accident claims young woman’s life

A mother of four was declared dead on the scene after another vehicle allegedly skipped a red traffic light.

A serious accident in the early hours of Saturday morning (6 August) claimed the life of a young woman and left two others injured.

It is believed that Rodney Pestana, 26, and his 27-year-old friend, Cornelle Conradie were travelling on Voortrekker Road towards Noordheuwel when another vehicle skipped the traffic light at the Paardekraal Drive intersection, causing a collision at 2.45am.

Paramedics from Netcare 911 found the wrecked bakkie on the opposite side of the road and Pestana’s vehicle where it had come to a standstill against one of the traffic lights.

Members of the Sector 4 Community Policing Forum were called to help control the accident scene.

The young woman was declared dead on the scene while the driver of the bakkie was treated and taken to Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital for further medical treatment.

“I would like to set the record straight. My son was never in ICU and was discharged from hospital the same day,” Rodney’s mother, Yolandi Coetzee Pestana said.

He sustained injuries to his leg, arm and face.

“My son broke down when we went to the accident scene to put up a cross for his late friend Cornelle. He said it still feels like a dream and cannot accept that she is gone.”
