Miss Heritage finalist walks her talk at her former school

Miss Heritage finalist, Kereeditse Mmualefe, gave an inspirational talk at her former high school in Munsieville.

Miss Heritage finalist, Kereeditse Mmualefe recently visited her former high school, Thuto Lefa Secondary, for a talk with the Grade 12 pupils.

The professional nurse started by introducing herself to the eager pupils and then told them what she experiences in her job as a nurse at Leratong Hospital’s trauma unit.

“At our trauma unit, we encounter girls and boys your age who are psychotic or experiencing very bad withdrawal symptoms. Some of the drugs that your peers abuse are used by medical staff to calm patients down when treating them, but if you’re going to abuse them, you will become addicted and end up at a mental institution – and you are all too young and too bright to go there,” she told the attentive pupils.

The pupils listened avidly as Kereeditse went on to advise them about different kinds of drugs, the dangers of transactional intercourse with older men, different family structures and peer pressure. She used her own life experiences to let the pupils know that they are not alone in the challenges they face.

The 27-year-old beauty is passionate about health, emotional and physiological well-being, which explains why she ventured in to nursing.

She plans to focus on providing study material to help address issues faced by the pupils at her former school, even after the Miss Heritage pageant ends.

“Kereeditse was a hardworking and intelligent pupil. You can be intelligent in class but if you’re not hardworking, you won’t make it anywhere. This girl spent her lunch breaks asking me questions about lessons we’d had earlier in class, and then she cheated me by teaching Grade 11 pupils what I was teaching her in Grade 12. I am extremely proud of her,” her former science teacher, Dannyboy MD Modisakeng told the News.

During one-on-one chats with the former Miss Thuto Lefa, a number of pupils shared the challenges they faced at the school. These issues include drug abuse, the lack of extra-curricular activities and a need for a councillor for emotional support.
