Rabies: calf tested positive

An eight rabies case has been reported.

In just over a month, eight rabies cases have been reported in the West Rand, with the latest case involving a calf.

No information has been made public yet, but the News has received confirmation that an eighth animal has been tested positive for the disease.

Following the vaccination campaign last week, the state veterinarian has said that there will be a follow up campaign in November, but if the community can come together and organise a group of more than 60 dogs, the state will send someone out to vaccinate the dogs free of charge. By law, all dogs and cats three months and older should be vaccinated against rabies.

He adds that if you or a family member are bitten by an animal, you should seek immediate medical attention.

If you have any questions about rabies or the vaccinations, contact the state veterinarian on 082 527 4783.
