Rabies outbreak: seventh case confirmed

A jackal tried to attack a German Shepard before running into the house.

A foreman at a local farm in Zwartkops heard his dogs barking in excess last week Friday, only to discover that a jackal was trying to attack his German Shepard.

The jackal then ran into the house, where it was later shot and sent to a local vet for testing. The test came back positive for rabies, making this the seventh case in the past month.

According to Trevor Roberts from Conserv Security, this recent outbreak of rabies is not due a lack of effort by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

“They have been running a rabies vaccination program for the past three years, with their most recent campaign coming to an end today.”

The reason behind this outbreak is still being investigated, and at this time there is no clear explanation as to why there has suddenly been so many cases.
