Winter Knights battle cold at fundraiser

Round Table Florida 21 again collected goods at President Hyper for the coming winter in aid of the homeless.

“Tin foods or blankets please”, “One blanket could change a life this winter” and “Please donate for the less fortunate” were some of the slogans written on white signboards held by the Winter Knights of the Round Table Florida 21 on Sunday 29 May.

The division hosted the annual Winter Knights Project at President Hyper where the organisation collected goods for the coming winter in aid of the homeless. The club members and their families also had a taste of a cold Krugersdorp morning.

“Winter Knights is a hands-on national project where we as Round Table support our local communities by collecting donations from the public to give back to those in need. This event is held every year during winter and we urge you to please support your community by donating,” said Gerhard van der Berg, Chairman of Round Table Florida 21.

Round Table Florida 21 is part of an international non-profit charitable association, Round Table International, which holds discussions and undertakes community service. The main purpose of the Winter Knights collection is to help spread warmth to those less fortunate through the donations from the community in the form of non- perishables, clothing, blankets and cash donations.

The association is more than 30 000 strong worldwide and “takes up your own time and is completely voluntary.”

Van der Berg told the News that last year, the South African divisions together did charity work to the value of about R30 million.

Round Table Florida 21, made up of men aged 18–45, will celebrate its 61st anniversary this year.

This Sunday (5 June) you can again drop off tinned food, old clothes or blankets at President Hyper’s main entrance.

“The donations we receive will be handed out to those in need out on the streets,” Van der Berg said.
