Eyewitness speaks of taxi accident

According to the eyewitness, the taxi burst into flames immediately after colliding with the light motor vehicle.

A motorist who witnessed this morning’s accident at the Silverstar intersection on the R28 told the News that the taxi was on fire before it overturned.

The eyewitness said he was about 100 metres behind the VW Polo this morning seconds before it collided with the taxi.

“I am not even sure if the traffic light was red or green at that moment, I just remember seeing the taxi speeding down the slipway towards the casino, and the next moment there was a collision.”

He explained that the impact happened in slow motion and the taxi collided with the front of the Polo.

“Even before the taxi hit the ground, it went up in flames. It was bizarre to see.”

The driver of the Polo quickly got out of the vehicle, with his face covered in blood.

The witness then saw people running towards the taxi and the vehicle to help extinguish the flames.

As soon as the various emergency services arrived on the scene, bystanders were asked to clear the area.

“One woman has been killed and 12 others injured,” ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring confirmed.

He also said that it was later discovered that a woman was trapped inside the burning taxi and unfortunately succumbed to her multiple burn wound injuries and was declared dead on the scene.

Another woman was found to have sustained critical injuries.

“Once treated, the critically injured patient was airlifted by a medical helicopter to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.”

Mogale City Traffic Department’s spokesperson, Papi Motaung has confirmed that the section of the R28 has been reopened.
