[WATCH] One dead as taxi goes up in flames

One person died, another was airlifted and several more were injured following an accident between a taxi and another vehicle.

A section of the R28 was closed after an accident near the Silverstar intersection this morning.

A taxi, fully loaded, burst into flames after it collided with a VW Polo at about 7.45am. Passengers frantically tried to escape the blaze.

Mogale City Emergency Management officials, ER24 paramedics and Traffic Department officials worked tirelessly to rescue the passengers from the burning taxi.

One of the passengers had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment for the serious injuries sustained during the accident, while several others were treated on the scene and transported via ambulances to various hospitals for further medical treatment.

According to Netcare 911, one passenger was burnt beyond recognition and could not be freed from the burning vehicle. The victim was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

“A section of the R28 was closed following an accident in front of the casino on the R28 towards Pretoria. Motorists are urged to use alternative routes until the scene has been cleared up,” Mogale City Traffic Department spokesperson, Papi Motaung said.

The cause of the accident is still unclear and under police investigation.
