Neighbours living adjacent to Robert Broom Drive told the News they heard a loud bang just before 7pm on 7 May and went to investigate.

In the road they met up with a passerby who told them to call for backup and not to approach the scene because there were many fatalities.

CPF patrollers and first-aid responders from the Sectors 3, 4 and 5 rushed to the scene where they closed off the road to tend to the victims.

Paramedics from ER24, Netcare 911, QRS, Mogale City Emergency Services, the Traffic Department, Road Safety and the local police arrived within minutes.

The chaotic scene saw both sides of the road closed off.

Four occupants died instantly and one child was in a very critical state. Paramedics carried the child’s fragile body on a gurney towards the helicopter to be airlifted to hospital, but the child passed away en route due to the serious injuries he sustained.

It is believed that the child’s leg and arm were extensively injured.

The aunt of the children, Emily Moyo, said their mother is not coping with the bad news.

“It’s a very painful experience, please pray for her,” Moyo said.

According to Moyo, the father and neighbour along with the children, who are believed to be 11, nine and four years of age, were on their way to buy supper when the accident happened.

The family are Zimbabwean nationals who live in Munsieville.

Although the cause of the accident is under investigation, rumours already being spread suggest that speed may have played a major role in the cause.
