Road block causes Sunday afternoon traffic jam

The traffic cops were able to successfully confront drivers about unpaid traffic fines.

A string of cars piled up on the R28 on Sunday (17 April) during a routine road block conducted by Mogale City’s Traffic Department.

Residents warned of the road block on the Krugersdorp Community Forum Facebook page yesterday afternoon but the warning was met with scrutiny.

Comments like “thank you for warning the criminals” and “it is defeating and obstructing the course of justice,” were made, but many road users were thankful for the heads-up. Many also commented and said they did not look forward to 30 minutes in uphill traffic.

The department’s spokesperson, Papi Motaung, said the road block was part of the daily road blocks set up across the Mogale City region by the department’s Warrant Section.

“We conducted three road blocks over this weekend alone,” he said.

Motaung added that they were able to successfully confront drivers about unpaid traffic fines.

Did you know:

The Automobile Association (AA) said that when road users are stopped in a roadblock, traffic authorities regularly try to create the impression that you have no option but to settle your fines there and then under threat of arrest. The association said officials cannot under any circumstances arrest you for an outstanding traffic fine for which there is no warrant of arrest. They may serve you with a summons to appear in court, as long as the court date on that summons is at least 14 days in the future (Sundays and public holidays excluded) but they may not force you to pay it immediately.
