Probe into fatal road of death accident
A case of culpable homicide has been opened following the fatal accident on the road of death.
Police are in the process of investigating the accident that claimed the lives of two elderly women on the infamous road of death.
Yesterday at around 9am Mogale City Emergency Services together with the Traffic Department and paramedics from ER24 rushed to the scene in Tarlton of yet another horrific accident on the R24 at the Ventersdorp and Randfontein intersection.
Since the accident numerous complaints and requests have flooded in regarding this problem intersection. Questions like why the authorities are not patrolling the area for speedsters, to suggestions of erecting proper stop signs and other danger signs were raised.
It is believed the Ford Ranger bakkie was travelling from Ventersdorp towards Krugersdorp when it collided with the Mercedez-Benz sedan which was traveling from Randfontein towards Tarlton.
The Randfontein Herald reported that the two women died after allegedly ignoring the Northway Road stop sign in the north-bound lane, resulting in the bakkie T-boning them.
One of the victims who was a passenger in the Merc was identified as May Grobler. Grobler is a 74-year-old widow and grandmother from Randfontein. She became a widow after her husband passed away three years ago.
Tarlton Police spokesperson, Constable Lucky Matome confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been registered since the incident.
The News contacted the Mogale City Local Municipality Spokesperson, Nkosana Zali, regarding a possible solution to this dangerous crossing.
“Condolences to the families. It is really sad,” Zali said in a written response.
It is believed that discussions to erect stop signs at this dangerous intersection are currently underway.
