Road of death claims another two lives

Two lifeless bodies were found in the accident scene near a dangerous blind spot on the R24.

A collision between a bakkie and light motor vehicle left two women in their 50’s dead.

The accident happened earlier this morning on the infamous road of death, the R24. Two others were also injured in what seems to have been a side collision between a Ford Ranger bakkie and a Mercedes-Benz C180 on a blind spot on the R24 intersection towards Ventersdorp.

Paramedics from ER24 arrived on the accident scene and found the light motor vehicle in the ditch next to the road and the bakkie against a road sign.

“On closer inspection, paramedics found the lifeless bodies of two women trapped inside the light motor vehicle. On assessment, paramedics found that the women had already succumbed to their injuries. Nothing more could be done and they were declared dead on the scene,” ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring said.

A man and woman, both in their 30’s, were discovered still seated inside the bakkie, both having sustained only moderate injuries.

Paramedics treated the patients and thereafter transported them to Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital for further care.

Although the exact cause of the collision will be investigated by local authorities, many complaints about the blind spots on this road could have played a role in the accident.

Due to the high speed limit on this road, residents have requested that a four-way stop, warning signs and rumble strips to be erected here.

Many complaints have been laid at relevant departments which seem to fall on deaf ears.
