Woman held at gunpoint in Rangeview

Three armed men approached a woman in her driveway.

A woman was held at gunpoint in her driveway, in what is believed to be an attempted hijacking, this morning in Rangeview.

Petro van der Merwe spoke to the News and said she returned home from the gym at around 6.30am when three men, appearing from a silver Mercedes-Benz, surrounded her car.

“Two of them stood on the left side of the car and the other, armed with a gun, stood at my door,” she said.

Van der Merwe remembered how she immediately locked her car doors and hooted. The two men on her left side ran because of the commotion, but the armed man at her door seemed more hesitant to leave, she said.

“He looked very self-assured and was very intimidating. I got such a fright, I did not know what to do,” she said.

Eventually, the armed man left and all three of them drove off in the Benz that is believed to be connected to several crimes throughout Johannesburg.

The News previously reported that according to police a woman was shot at in Dromore Street in Kenmare on 10 March as she parked her vehicle in a driveway.

After the suspects forced the woman into their car, a silver Mercedes-Benz, where they allegedly forcefully took her jewelry and assaulted her. Police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale, said the suspects later dropped the woman off. She was later taken to hospital after sustaining serious injuries.

“There were also three suspects in the vehicle all armed with firearms,” she said.

According to Mashale, police were investigating a case of armed robbery and attempted murder. It is not yet clear if any arrests were made. Van der Merwe said she is not planning on opening a case at the police, but is thankful that no harm was done to her.
