Taxi driver shot in broad day light

A taxi driver is seriously injured after being shot in broad day light.

Traffic started to pile up and motorists had to be redirected following a shooting incident in Luipaard Street earlier this morning.

The intersection opposite Medicross Krugersdorp and a car dealership were closed off by police, members of the Mogale City Traffic Department and local Community Policing Forum just after 11am.

A beggar at the intersection told the News that occupants seated in what looked like a Hyundai was seen stopping at a stationary taxi in the left-hand lane in front of the car dealership.

The next moment several gunshots were heard going off.

“A 33-year-old victim was shot several times in the upper body by the unknown suspects,” Krugersdorp Police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale said in a police statement.

“The suspects then got out of their vehicle and opened the taxi driver’s door and started arguing with him. One of the suspect took out a firearm and shot him several times before fleeing the scene.”

The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries sustained from the shooting.

The police are still on the scene gathering evidence and are appealing to the community to assist with information that can help the investigating officer arrest these suspects.
