Major economic boost and upgrade near Lanseria

Greengate stands out as a critical development for the economic revitalisation of the Western Corridor.

Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) together with the Gauteng Provincial Government recently officiated an estimated R2 billion Greengate development. It also includes the major upgrade of the key arterial road Beyers Naudé Drive that cuts across to Lanseria Airport.

The three spheres of government including Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport launched a private-public partnership (PPP) that will enable Gauteng to improve the development of freight and logistics hubs in the province.

Speaking at a sod-turning event at the project’s site in Greengate, Gauteng Premier David Makhura stated that the development would be a catalyst for further investment and economic development in the area.

“The development of this road is in line with our commitment in the State of the Province Address to upgrade and expand all major roads that connect and integrate the different development corridors and key economic nodes of our City Region over the next three years.

“This western corridor must anchor the developments in the whole West Rand. We need jobs in our economy. We are going through a difficult economic period and the jobs that are coming here are needed here,” Makhura said.

Greengate stands out as a critical development for the economic revitalisation of the Western Corridor. During the ceremony Makhura was joined by MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi and Mogale’s Executive Mayor, Koketso Calvin Seerane.

The road is being developed in partnership with the development company Afroprop and the Spar Group. Afroprop has offered a contribution of R10 million towards the upgrade of Beyers Naudé Drive between Zandspruit and the N14 Tshwane/ Krugersdorp highway, and will be rolling out other bulk services for the development, which will benefit other property owners in the region and local people.

The Spar Group initially will invest over R500 million in land and buildings towards the construction of the Greengate Development Centre. The benefits of the Greengate project include job creation for local sub-contractors and labour (approximately 210 jobs) over a two-year period, opportunities for local contractors and an upgrade of the electricity network.
