Haroon is a well-known icon in his community, in South Africa and in Africa for his projects with the Crescent of Hope organisation. He was instrumental in upgrading the Azaadville security measures and for his projects of digging boreholes in drought-stricken areas.

The Azaadville community gathered at the deceased’s home in Asmet Crescent where he and Yosuf were shot by three armed robbers at 1am this morning (3 March).

Haroon and Yosuf were both rushed to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital by helicopter where Haroon died soon after and Yosuf was later today pronounced dead. According to Ismail Nana, a member of the Azaadville CPF and Neighbourhood Watch, both men were shot towards the left side of their upper bodies.

“We still have no clue as to who the perpetrators might have been,” he said.

Shabier Dabhelia, Chairperson of the Azaadville Community Policing Forum and a member of the Neighbourhood Watch, said that this is the first murder in their tight-knit community in three years.

“Three years ago we lost a mother and her son also because of a brutal murder. The murderers have still not been charged,” he said.

Shabier hopes that this time the court can put the suspects to book.

“It is becoming more and more difficult to to be safe with the lack of structural support the country provides,” Shabier added.

Haroon and Yosuf will be laid to rest by their family members later today in the Azaadville Cemetery.
