Community in shock after murder of icon

The Azaadville community was left in shock after the murder of one their most prominent community leaders.

A local man, responsible for numerous community and safety projects locally and abroad, was shot by armed robbers in his home this morning.

Haroon Saleh and his son were shot during a robbery at around 1am this morning, 3 March. Saleh was airlifted to hospital where he later died and his son remains in a critical condition in Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.

According to Shabier Dabhelia, Chairperson of the Azaadville Community Policing Forum and a member of the Neighbourhood Watch, three armed suspects entered their home through the bathroom window.

“Haroon and his wife were asleep in their upstairs bedroom when the suspects gained entry. His son was tied-up downstairs, where he also was asleep. An elderly woman was also asleep in another bedroom,” he told the News.

Two suspects made their way to Haroon’s room where a struggle ensued and where he was consequently shot. Haroon’s son was able to free himself and hurried upstairs where he was then gunned down.

Haroon is well-known for his contribution to Azaadville’s upgraded security measures and for being one of the founders of Crescent of Hope. He was also involved in the drilling of boreholes in drought areas in South Africa and the African continent.

Haroon leaves behind his wife, daughter and three sons. The funeral for Haroon will take place at 5.30pm today at 39 Asmet Crescent.
