Former Norie pupil dies in head-on collision

The young woman was a student at the North West University who was travelling to Pretoria with three of her friends.

Another young person sadly lost their life in an accident, which also claimed the lives of two others.

Marquerite Brink, a former Hoërskool Noordheuwel pupil, was on her way to Pretoria from Potchefstroom with her fellow university friends on Friday 19 February.

It is believed the vehicle the four friends were travelling in on the N14 between Ventersdorp and Krugersdorp, collided head-on with a truck at around 4pm. Marquerite and three of her friends, Elinda Booysen, Jeanette Theron and Rachelle-Mari Stofberg were on their way to celebrate Rachelle-Mari’s birthday, the Middelburg Observer initially reported.

Both Marquerite and Elinda died instantly while Rachelle and Jeanette were flown to hospital. Rachelle unfortunately passed away in hospital, while Jeanette is still battling her critical injuries.

All four students were completing their honours degrees at the North West University.

The Middelburg Observer reported that the name of the truck driver was not made public but that it was confirmed by a reliable source that he tried to overtake another vehicle and collided head-on with the students’ car.

Hoërskool Noordheuwel posted their condolences for Marquerite’s family on their Facebook page. The 2012 matriculant’s funeral will be held on Friday 26 February in Roodepoort.

It is not clear whether the funeral will be a public affair.
