Woman followed home – shot at nine times

A woman was shot at in her driveway by robbers who followed her home.

Community Policing Forum (CPF) patrollers rushed to Batavia Street in Quellerie Park after gunshots were heard on Friday afternoon.

A resident was on her way home from a local supermarket when she suddenly noticed a white Mercedes-Benz parked behind her as she stopped in her driveway at around 4.50pm on 19 February.

As she opened the electric gate, a suspect jumped out of the vehicle and broke her window and sprayed pepper spray in her face.

The woman quickly accelerated her vehicle resulting in the suspects opening fire. The frightened woman then drove through her gate, knocking it off its rail as she raced into her driveway to escape the suspects.

A resident who witnessed the ordeal told the News that he was travelling along Kompanjie Street towards Batavia Street when an armed suspect pointed a firearm to his vehicle and instructed him to “get lost”.

“As we were driving towards the stop intersection we heard a loud noise and saw the gate falling,” Johan Swart, who was with his wife and three children at the time of the incident, said.

He then quickly put his vehicle in reverse and disappeared into the side street and alerted a neighbour to contact the CPF and police.

“Drive away or I will shoot you,” Swart remembers the suspect shout at them.

The suspects then climbed into the white Mercedes-Benz and fled up the street as they fired two more gunshots; one aimed at another neighbour in the street who came out to inspect after hearing the commotion.

The street was closed off and cones where scattered along the road to cover the empty bullet cases from the shots fired.

It is believed the robbers pulled the victim’s wedding rings from her finger before fleeing the scene.

“The neighbour who was shot at, fortunately did not get hurt and no one else sustained any serious injuries. It is alleged that the suspects shot nine times at the vehicle,” Krugersdorp Police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale said.

Krugersdorp Police are investigating a case of armed robbery and attempted murder.

“We are appealing to the community to assist us with information that can help the investigating officer arrest the suspects involved in this serious crime.”
