Hundreds gather to pay their respects to Pieter

The driver of the bakkie who crashed into an 18-year-old Noordheuwel pupil allegedly did not have a valid driver's license.

Friends, family and fellow pupils gathered at the scene where Pieter-Schalk Grobbelaar, 17, died to pay their respects.

Grobbelaar died after sustaining critical injuries when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a bakkie on Luipaard Street on Saturday, 20 February, around noon.

It is believed the driver of the bakkie was turning right into Luipaard Street when he hit Grobbelaar who was travelling towards the CBD’s direction.

Numerous Community Policing Forum members and their first aid responders were on hand to divert traffic and block off the street for an emergency helicopter landing.

Paramedics from ER24, Netcare 911 as well as state ambulance services and a hospital reaction unit assisted in stabilising the teen before he was airlifted.

However, around two hours later, Grobbelaar sadly passed away in hospital.

One of Grobbelaar’s Facebook posts state that he had received the motorcycle which he was driving at the time of the accident, 11 days prior to the accident that claimed his life.

“Our sympathy and deepest condolences goes out to his friends and family,” reads an announcement posted by Hoërskool Noordheuwel on their Facebook page.

It is believed that the driver of the bakkie was a foreign national who did not have a valid driver’s license at the time of the accident.

The News has contacted the Krugersdorp Police’s spokesperson Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale for comment regarding the allegation against the driver.

Once received, it will be published.
