With water losses at 42 per cent, a major leak raises major concerns.

After a resident spotted a possible major water leak, and the News reported on it, council meetings have still not yet begun to address the issue.

According to Mogale City’s last financial report, 42 per cent of the municipality’s water was lost last year. In December last year, a Rant-en-Dal resident came across what he thought to be a serious water leakage that the municipality might not even know of.

Amanda de Lange, the Leader of the Freedom Front Plus in the West Rand, notified Mogale City Local Municipality about the leakage after she also checked it out.

“This is definitely a big problem,” she said.

“I have raised the issue at the last financial portfolio meeting.”

Annette Fourie, a Democratic Alliance councillor and member of the Infrastructure Portfolio at Mogale City, said that because the bulrushes have grown as big as they did, it means the leakage is not new.

“But we have not yet had an Infrastructure Portfolio meeting since the year started, so I could not discuss the matter with the portfolio members yet,” she said.

Amanda argued that the problem has gone unnoticed because of poor workmanship and workers that do not have the necessary experience at the municipality.

“The Department of Infrastructure in Mogale City is the most problematic department,” she added.

According to Amanda, workers from the municipality has looked into the possible major leak at the Munsieville Water Reservoir.
