Standing in the voting line this year?

This year is the municipal elections. Will you vote for your local councillors?

Seven out of 10 people who were asked, said they are planning on voting in the upcoming municipal elections.

“Of course I am voting. If you have a voice, you must use it,” said Alma Luts, local business owner.

She said you cannot complain about service delivery if you do not use your vote.

The municipal elections are held every five years to elect councillors who will be responsible for governing a municipality for the next five years.

The current term of office of municipal councils ends on 18 May, the Independant Electoral Committe (IEC) states on its website.

The councillors you vote for will serve on the town councils, which provide service delivery that includes water, electricity and sanitation to the respective communities.

South Africa’s local government is made up of eight metropolitan municipalities, 44 district municipalities and 207 local municipalities.

Mogale City Local Municipality is one of the 207 local municipalities that govern their respective areas. If you register on 5 or 6 March, you will have a say in who sits on the local council.

“I’m not planning on moving any time soon. I like Krugersdorp, that is why I care how services are delivered and who is in charge of delivering them,” said Tanya Diedericks, a resident of this historic town.

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs is yet to announce the exact date of this year’s municipal elections, but in terms of the Constitution the election must be held between 18 May and 16 August.

A person can register to vote in South Africa if he or she is a South African citizen, at least 16 years old (you can only vote from age 18 though), have a green, bar-coded identity document (ID) or a smartcard ID or a valid temporary identity certificate.
