Key West still closed after destructive storm

Key West Shopping Centre releases a statement following the collapse of the roof after the hail storm over the weekend.

Key West Shopping Centre’s doors are still closed after a section of the roof collapsed due to the massive storm that hit Krugersdorp this past Saturday afternoon, 9 January.

Shoppers and staff members were evacuated from the mall as Disaster Management members from the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) of Sectors 3, 4, 5 and 8 along with Mogale City’s Emergency Management Services moved in to help secure the mall.

A section of The Hub’s ceiling and roof collapsed into the store leaving a staff member injured.

A pregnant woman was also among the alleged five that were injured.

The ceiling above Milky Lane was also damaged during the hail storm and it is believed that holes had to made in the PicknPay’s ceiling to relief pressure caused by the heavy hail on the rooftop.

In a statement from Key West Shopping Centre’s marketing manager Michelle Papastefanou described that a small portion of the roof was damaged.

“Key West Shopping Centre can confirm that an extremely severe rain and hail storm in the Krugersdorp area resulted in the damage of small sections of the shopping centre roof, mainly located in the back area of The Hub store.

Mall security reacted immediately and, in conjunction with Disaster Management teams, assisted customers and retailers. Two people were transported to hospital with injuries,” the statement reads.
