Cops facing attempted murder charges

Two sergeants of the police's K9 Unit were released on bail after allegedly trying to kill a Nigerian man earlier this year.

Two police officers of the Roodepoort K9 Unit were released on bail after an attempted murder incident earlier this year.

The two sergeants were arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) yesterday, 10 December after they allegedly robbed and attempted to kill a 33-year-old Nigerian man in January this year.

It is believed the cops stopped a Nigerian national who was in possession of R10 000.

After he allegedly resisted arrest he freed himself and fled as police shot and wounded him.

The cops allegedly managed to steal R7 100 from him before threatening to kill him after they followed him to his house where they damaged his property.

A case of attempted murder, assault with the intention of causing grievous body harm (GBH), theft, malicious damage to property and defeating the ends of justice was opened at Krugersdorp Police station and is currently being investigated by Ipid.

The two policeman aged 41 and 38 were finally arrested and appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court yesterday around 1pm where they each received bail of R2 000.

The case has been postponed to next year.
