“This is a robbery” – bogus cop said

Warning: Beware of a bogus traffic cop operating in Krugersdorp and possibly targeting women.

The warning message circulating on Facebook, BlackBerry Messenger and WhatsApp is legit as three complaints were laid with police about a bogus cop targeting women.

One female complainant alleges that she was driving along Robert Broom Drive when she was stopped on the corner of Wren Street by a ‘cop’ in a champagne coloured Volkswagen Golf 7 on 23 November at around 10.35am.

“It is alleged that the driver of the Golf was wearing a Metro police uniform. The driver approached the victim and checked the licence disc of her vehicle. He then used the two-way radio as if he was checking if the car had been stolen,” Krugersdorp Police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale said.

The ‘cop’ then told the complainant, “this is a robbery give me your watch, earrings and wedding ring”.

While pointing a firearm, the ‘cop’ demanded jewelry from the complainant and instructed her to drive and not look back.

The suspect is described as a tall, well-built man with a shaved head and has a scar on the chin.

Two other cases with similar circumstances were also reported to the Krugersdorp Police yesterday, 24 November.

“We are appealing to the community to be on the lookout for this type of a vehicle and report to the police if it is seen around your area. The Traffic Department and Krugersdorp Police will have a meeting to determine how best to solve this problem,” Mashale assured.
