Boy’s finger might be amputated after dentist’s visit

Parents fear for the worst after their son's finger was accidentally caught in a door.

The Pitzar family is anticipating a doctor’s visit tomorrow to find out if their son’s finger will be amputated following a dentist visit on Monday, 9 November.

Mark and Angie Pitzar took their son to the dentist situated at the Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital to extract a tooth when his finger got caught in the hinge of a door and subsequently slammed shut which left him severely injured.

“When I arrived at the dentist I saw my son’s hand covered in blood,” Mark explained.

His son’s mouth was sedated and he was sent back to the waiting room until it was his turn to see the dentist.

“When they called him back into the room his finger got caught in the door as he tried to pull himself up from the chair. The nurse on the other side did not see him and as he kept trying to open the door, she kept shutting it.”

The boy’s finger was so badly injured, he needed to be admitted into hospital for the night.

Eyewitnesses who were also at the dentist contacted the News and explained that the boy did not do what he was told.

“He was told to sit still after his mouth was sedated, but he kept putting his fingers between the door and the hinge while his mother sat watching,” Andre, one of the parents who contacted the News, said.

He stated that after the accident happened, the nurse involved as well as other hospital staff, did everything to help the boy.

“They were very sincere and helpful and it was not their fault at all.”

On Tuesday morning the boy was transferred to Leratong Hospital where he saw a bone specialist who cleaned and stitched up the wound on his finger in hopes of saving the boy’s finger.

Since then he was sent home to recover and is due to see the doctor again on Thursday who will confirm if his finger is to be amputated or not.

Mark has laid a complaint at the regional representative of the dentist and opened a case at the Krugersdorp police station.

“This anticipation is killing us. We will just have to wait and see if his finger will be amputated,” said the worried father.

The News has approached the hospital’s spokesperson for comment regarding the situation, but none has been forthcoming.
